Latvia's airspace security will be strengthened during the period of the 15th Saeima elections. According to the Ministry of Defence, four Eurofighter jets belonging to the German Air Force will arrive at the National Armed Forces' Lielvārde military base in late September for this purpose.

The German fighter jets will be stationed in Latvia on a temporary basis, with their main task being to provide additional airspace security during the election period.

Other allied nations also contributing

The ministry stated that the air forces of Italy and Turkey will also contribute to strengthening the protection of Latvia's airspace. This means that, in addition to the German fighters, resources from several other NATO allied countries are planned to be used to ensure heightened airspace control and monitoring during the election period.

The measure is part of the broader framework of NATO allied presence in the Baltic states, where air force contingents from various member states are regularly rotated to patrol and defend the region's airspace.
