Saeima to vote on fuel price cut and wide range of bills
Saeima's Budget and Finance Committee has requested urgent inclusion of amendments that could lower fuel prices by about eight cents per litre, alongside a broad agenda of legislation on September 24.
Latvia's Saeima Budget and Finance (Tax) Committee has asked that amendments potentially cutting fuel prices by roughly eight cents per litre be added urgently to the parliamentary agenda for September 24. Lawmakers are also continuing to work through last week's unfinished agenda.
Energy, construction and procurement
In a final reading, MPs will consider amendments to the Energy Law allowing the sector to fix damage faster during crises. A third reading covers Criminal Law amendments introducing criminal liability for cartel agreements in public procurement. Construction Law amendments, also in final reading, would widen the pool of people permitted to carry out certain construction work and simplify building registration.
Road traffic and consumer protection
A first reading will address Road Traffic Law amendments expanding options for filling out agreed accident reports, plus a new bill on liability for defective goods and services and compensation for victims. MPs will also weigh a new framework for identifying and assisting victims of human trafficking.
Spatial planning and social assistance
A second reading covers amendments transferring authority to suspend municipal spatial plans to the Cabinet of Ministers, and a bill on governance of the Latgale Embassy GORS cultural centre. Credit Institution Law amendments would let social services access individuals' account data from banks to streamline social assistance decisions.
University hospitals and foreign policy
The Social and Labour Affairs Committee has requested inclusion of a bill on university clinical hospitals that would change the legal status and financing model of Latvia's three major clinical university hospitals: Pauls Stradiņš, Riga East, and the Children's Clinical University Hospital. The Saeima will also decide on Latvian military participation in international operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
September 24 session
The agenda lists 21 items, including a final-reading expansion of the ban on importing Russian- and Belarusian-origin food products, changes reinforcing the state language in public media, Child Rights Protection Law amendments for early detection of developmental risks, a decision on Latvia joining a convention protecting cultural property in armed conflict, and a new draft Architecture Law.
