Saeima committee backs enshrining Latvian Radio and Latvian Television names in law
A Saeima committee backed, for first reading, amendments that would legally secure the preservation of the names "Latvijas Radio" and "Latvijas Televīzija".

The Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee of the Saeima, Latvia's parliament, on Wednesday backed for first reading a bill that would enshrine in law the preservation of the names of the public media outlets "Latvijas Radio" (Latvian Radio) and "Latvijas Televīzija" (Latvian Television). The amendments to the Law on Public Electronic Mass Media and Their Management were submitted by lawmakers from the Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS), a party represented in parliament.
What the amendments provide
The initiative aims to establish that the names of both public media outlets must be retained as a nationally significant historical identity of public media. The amendments concern the law that regulates the operation and management of public electronic media.
What happens next
The committee's support means the bill can be considered by the Saeima in a first reading. Further readings will be needed before the amendments could take effect.
