Criminal investigation launched after cyclist's death at Unity bike race
State Police have opened a criminal investigation into the death of a participant in the traditional Unity cycling race held in Sigulda. The exact cause of death will be determined by forensic examination.
Latvia's State Police have launched a criminal investigation following a tragic incident during Sunday's traditional Unity cycling race in and around Sigulda, police confirmed.
The man who died was born in 1981. The precise circumstances and cause of death are to be established through a forensic examination.
How the incident unfolded
Igo Japiņš, a representative responsible for organizing the race, said the participant fell ill while cycling uphill. According to him, organizers had no prior knowledge of any potential health problems the athlete may have had.
An emergency medical services team was dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, the paramedics took over resuscitation efforts that had already been started by medics on duty at the event, continuing them for roughly half an hour. Despite the efforts of bystanders and medical staff, the cyclist could not be saved.
This year's Unity cycling race in Sigulda marked its 36th edition and is one of the region's traditional sporting events.
