Saxony-Anhalt premier warns of AfD rival ahead of pivotal state election

Ahead of the September 6 Saxony-Anhalt state election, where the AfD could become the strongest party for the first time, incumbent premier Sven Schulze (CDU) trails challenger Ulrich Siegmund in polls. In the campaign's final stretch, Schulze pushes economic solutions while accusing his rival of lacking real answers.

On September 6, the German state of Saxony-Anhalt faces what is being described as a historic election, one in which the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) could for the first time become the strongest party in a state parliament. Incumbent state premier Sven Schulze of the CDU is trailing significantly behind his main challenger, AfD candidate Ulrich Siegmund, according to polling.

Politico's Gordon Repinski joined Schulze for a walk through his constituency during the final stretch of what is being called the toughest campaign in the state, speaking with him about his strategy and the state of the race.

Economic focus and criticism of AfD

Schulze is centering his closing campaign message on concrete economic proposals. He argues that while Siegmund and the AfD are quick to point to real problems in the region, such as job losses and school closures, they fail to offer pragmatic solutions. Schulze contends that in the event of genuine crises, the AfD lacks the political and economic networks needed to respond effectively.

Campaign controversies

The conversation also touched on contentious moments from the campaign trail, including appearances by German actor Dieter Hallervorden at campaign events, as well as friction within Schulze's own CDU party.

Coalition questions left open

Looking ahead to election night, Schulze avoided committing to a clear position on a potential coalition with the Left party (Die Linke). He did, however, stress his overriding goal: that Saxony-Anhalt must continue to be governed from the political center.
