Salacgrīva marks 20 years of Naborigama kiln, unveils second fire sculpture
For 20 years, Salacgrīva has hosted a Japanese-style Naborigama kiln built by ceramicist Imants Klīdzējs, and the town will now unveil a second fire sculpture called "Tower of Babel".
The town of Salacgrīva is celebrating a milestone this year: its Japanese-style Naborigama kiln, created by ceramicist Imants Klīdzējs, has been in operation for 20 years.
The kiln fires ceramic works by both Latvian and foreign artists over several days at very high temperatures. A defining feature of the process is its unpredictability — the final appearance of the pieces cannot be known until the kiln is opened after firing.
A new fire sculpture for the town
Alongside the kiln's anniversary, Salacgrīva is also preparing to unveil a second fire sculpture, called "Tower of Babel". It is planned to open at midnight between Saturday and Sunday, following roughly a day and a half of firing beforehand.
With this new sculpture, Salacgrīva continues a tradition tied to fire and ceramic art in the town's cultural life.
