Latvia's State Police have confirmed, following expert examinations, that substances found on a man detained in Saldus in May are illegal drugs: 102.02 grams of cocaine and 83.17 grams of marijuana. The news agency LETA learned this from the police; the information was provided by Madara Šeršņova, senior public relations specialist at the State Police.
Detention and search
On 14 May at about 9:10 p.m., officers of the Southern Kurzeme precinct of the State Police Kurzeme regional department detained a man in Saldus on suspicion of illegal trafficking in intoxicating substances. Substances resembling drugs were found on him.
Later the same day, officers with a police dog handler and a service dog searched the man's residence, as well as movable and immovable property belonging to him. Cocaine, marijuana and cash amounting to several tens of thousands of euros were seized. The money has been frozen, as it is suspected to have been obtained through crime, possibly by selling drugs.
Criminal proceedings
Expert examinations were ordered in the criminal case to establish the composition and quantity of the seized substances, and these have now been completed. The man has been given suspect status and a preventive measure not involving deprivation of liberty. Police say he had not previously come to their attention.
Under Latvia's Criminal Law, unlawful possession and transport of narcotic substances for sale, as well as their unlawful sale, are punishable by two to eight years in prison, with or without confiscation of property, and with probation supervision of up to three years. The investigation continues.
Police appeal
The State Police remind residents that trafficking in intoxicating substances is illegal and punishable in Latvia, and urge people to report suspected dealers. Tips can be submitted by calling 112 or the police helpline 67 075 444, which is an automated answering service, so the information must be described precisely.
