Elevated E.coli levels found again in Saldus lake, swimming not advised
A repeat water sample from Saldus lake has again shown elevated E.coli bacteria levels, prompting the Health Inspectorate to restrict swimming there. Residents are advised to avoid bathing in the lake for now.
Latvia's Health Inspectorate has introduced a swimming restriction at the lake in Saldus after a follow-up water sample again revealed elevated levels of E.coli bacteria.
The additional sample was taken from the lake on August 31, and its analysis confirmed the previously identified problem: the concentration of the bacteria in the water exceeds the permitted norm. Based on these findings, the inspectorate decided to impose a bathing restriction on the water body to protect public health.
The presence of E.coli in water typically indicates fecal contamination and can pose health risks if contaminated water is ingested, for instance while swimming. Residents and visitors to the lake are therefore advised to refrain from swimming there until further notice.
Updates on the situation, including any possible lifting of the restriction, are expected to follow additional water quality testing.
