E. coli detected in Saldus Lake; swimming restrictions issued in Riga
The Health Inspectorate advises against swimming in Saldus Lake after finding elevated levels of Escherichia coli. Several Riga swimming spots are also subject to advice or a ban.
Latvia’s Health Inspectorate has issued fresh advice on swimming water safety. The public is urged to avoid swimming in Saldus Lake because analyses have found an elevated concentration of the bacterium Escherichia coli. The presence of E. coli points to microbiological contamination, which may pose a health hazard. Therefore, the inspectorate recommends that people do not use the lake for swimming.
In Riga, several spots are also subject to restrictions. Swimming is not recommended in Bullupe near Birzes Street and in the Daugava opposite 324D Latgales Street. In the Daugava opposite 320 Latgales Street, swimming is forbidden. The distinction between a recommendation and a ban indicates that the level of contamination varies by location, but caution is advised everywhere.
The inspectorate’s announcements are meant for the general public, including families with children and regular visitors to swimming sites.
