On Saturday, June 27, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) responded to a call in Saldus region where a deceased person was recovered from a pond. This swimming season, which began in mid-May, has seen 17 fatalities retrieved from water bodies.

VUGD reminds that during hot weather, caution is essential – recklessness and swimming under the influence of alcohol can lead to tragedy. Swimming alone or in unfamiliar places is particularly dangerous.

Later that afternoon, around 2 PM, VUGD rushed to Jūrmala, where a water motorcycle capsized about 100 meters from shore with two people on board. One person reached the shore independently before rescuers arrived, while the other was brought ashore by VUGD personnel. Both were wearing life jackets.

Earlier, around 1 PM, VUGD received a call to Aizkraukle parish in Aizkraukle region, where a two-story residential building was on fire. The flames engulfed the first floor, second floor, and attic. One person was rescued from the first floor, injured, and handed over to medical services. Two dogs were removed from the building, one of which had died.

Over the past 24 hours, VUGD responded to a total of 59 calls. Of these, 22 were firefighting operations (including one forest fire), 26 were rescue operations, and 11 calls turned out to be false alarms.
