Saldus marks 170th anniversary with an interactive walking performance
The Latvian town of Saldus is celebrating its 170th anniversary with an interactive walking performance created by local residents, telling the stories of notable people connected to the town. The show also marks the 160th birth anniversary of painter Jānis Rozentāls.
The town of Saldus is celebrating its 170th anniversary this year, and to mark its history, local residents have created an interactive walking performance called "Saldus skices" (Saldus Sketches).
Participants move from one location to another around the town, and along the way, stories gradually unfold about people who helped make the name of Saldus known more widely. Among them are painter Jānis Rozentāls, musician Ēriks Ķiģelis, and poet Māris Čaklais.
A double anniversary
The performance also marks another round anniversary this year: 160 years since the birth of painter Jānis Rozentāls. In this way, "Saldus skices" brings together two significant milestones in a single narrative, tracing the town's history and the legacy of the people connected to it.
The interactive format allows participants not just to watch but to physically move through the town, experiencing the stories in the very locations tied to each featured personality.
