Two killed, two seriously injured in car crash in Salnava parish

A serious road accident in Salnava parish, Ludza municipality, in eastern Latvia, killed two people and left two others with serious injuries on Sunday, 25 October. The incident was reported by the State Police.
According to the police, the emergency call about the crash on the P48 road came in at 8:56 a.m. A passenger car veered off the carriageway, struck a tree and rolled onto its roof. One of the victims died at the scene, and another died of injuries in a medical facility. The remaining two victims were taken to hospital with serious trauma.
Eyewitness: like a scene from a film
A local resident who was driving to a shop happened to witness the aftermath. On her Facebook profile, she described what she saw as a scene from a horror film. She wrote that car debris was scattered across the road and the victims lay at the roadside. Rescuers and medics rushed to help: one person received resuscitation, while another was covered.
She said it was especially hard to hear the parents of one of the victims being told what had happened to their child. As a mother herself, she said such news makes one's blood run cold.
Appeal against drunk driving
The woman's post also mentioned that she had read comments under a Sadursme.lv article about the crash. She asked people not to criticise or condemn but to reflect. In her words, the make of the car or the age of the driver does not matter; the key point is never to get behind the wheel drunk. She urged people to think of those waiting for them at home and expressed condolences to the relatives of the victims.
