This week in tech, several phone announcements indicate that the folding and flipping phone category is maturing.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8

Samsung's latest foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, features a wide display that many testers find the right shape and size. While the price remains double what it needs to be to truly compete, Samsung is gradually making a compelling case for foldables. The purple color is particularly noted.

Light Flip – minimalist flip phone

Light Phone announced the Light Flip, a $299 clamshell device designed not to replace your smartphone but to encourage leaving it at home occasionally. Shipping starts early next year, and preorders are open. CEO Kai Tang, who uses the Light Phone exclusively, shared his homescreen: no wallpaper, with tools like Phone, Alarm, Weather, Directions, Music, and a Language tool (a custom 8-Ball-like feature from a 2023 collaboration with pgLang).

Xteink X4 Pro – tiny e-reader

The tiny e-reader segment continues to grow. The new Xteink X4 Pro at $99 features a built-in light, making it the best of its kind. While the touchscreen is optional, many users appreciate the compactness.

Other notable products this week

Other recommendations include the word game Tagline from Merriam-Webster, a Linux introductory video "Technically Competent: Installing Linux" by the McElroy family, and the comedy film "The Dink" about pickleball. Also catching attention: camera accessory Peak Design Field Bracket, and the new "Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender" film with reviews saying "looks great, meh story."
