Latvia's Samauskis sets national U20 record, reaches discus final
Latvian discus thrower Toms Samauskis broke the national U20 record during qualification at the World U20 Championships in Oregon, securing a spot in the final set for August 9.
At the World Athletics U20 Championships taking place in Oregon, USA, Latvian discus thrower Toms Samauskis has qualified for the final. During qualification, the 2025 European Youth Olympic Festival champion recorded a throw of 60.61 metres on his second attempt, breaking his previous personal best of 59.80 metres and setting a new Latvian U20 national record in the process. The throw exceeded the qualifying standard for the final, set at 60.50 metres, and placed Samauskis sixth among all qualifiers. A 1.75-kilogram discus was used in the competition. The discus final is scheduled for August 9 at 22:00.
Other Latvian athletes
Several other young Latvian athletes are competing at the championships. Hurdler Ksenija Kozlova advanced to the semifinal of the 400m hurdles with a personal best of 59.31, with the semifinal set to take place overnight on August 9 at 4:23. Triple jumper Brenda Apsīte finished 22nd out of 26 competitors in the overall standings. In the heptathlon, Nikola Bunde placed 38th out of 24 in the combined standings, while Adriana Reitmane placed 14th out of 24. In the decathlon, Kārlis Feldmanis did not finish the competition, while Ernests Lešinskis also took part. Haralds Nungurs competed in the hammer throw, finishing 21st out of 24. Elizabete Cīrule, entered in the 100m hurdles, did not start her event. In the 400m, Emīls Lamba finished 20th out of 59, while in the 400m hurdles Toms Melderis placed 60th out of 67.
