Samsung has established a new division named RX, or Robotics eXperience, to consolidate all its robotics projects. CEO TM Roh will personally oversee the division. The strategy will be led by Dongkun Lee, who joined Samsung in May as an Executive Vice President. Before joining Samsung, Lee led Hyundai's robotics strategy, including Boston Dynamics. While RX will be based in Samsung's Seoul facilities in South Korea, the company also plans to build robotics research hubs in the US, China and Japan to tap into local expertise. This move signals Samsung's serious commitment to developing physical AI, mirroring trends in the tech industry. Hyundai recently acquired the rest of Boston Dynamics for similar reasons. In February, a robotics company founded by Alphabet for manufacturing robotics was folded into Google. OpenAI is working on physical devices for ChatGPT, starting with a speaker. According to Korea JoongAng Daily, Samsung intends to start manufacturing humanoid robots this year. Roh previously announced a 19 trillion Korean won ($13 billion) investment in manufacturing facilities in Gumi, Korea for humanoid robot production.
