SanDisk's New 8TB PS5 SSD Costs More Than Three Times the Price of a PS5 Pro
SanDisk launched the Optimus GX Pro 850P NVMe SSD, with the 8TB version priced at $2,960 – over triple the cost of a PS5 Pro, highlighting the ongoing global memory crisis.

SanDisk has unveiled a new line of officially licensed SSD expansion drives for the PS5 and PS5 Pro, branded as Optimus GX Pro 850P. This series replaces the previous WD_Black naming and is available in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB capacities. The top-tier 8TB model is priced at a staggering $2,960, down from its regular price of $3,700. For context, that is more than three times the price of a PS5 Pro in the US, which already includes a 2TB SSD.
Even the 2TB variant, at $760 (reduced from $950), costs over $100 more than a standard PS5 with a disc drive. The drive uses PCIe 4.0 with read/write speeds of 7,300/6,300 MB/s and features a heatsink. These specs make it nearly identical to the WD_Black SN850X it appears to replace. Notably, the 8TB WD_Black SN850X was available for under $600 just last year.
The Optimus GX Pro 850P launches amid a global memory crisis, which is driving up prices across the board. Digital Foundry notes that a sale bringing the 8TB model back to the $600 range would represent an 84% discount. Price hikes have become common in gaming hardware: Sony raised prices on the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PS Portal; Microsoft increased Xbox console prices twice in 2025; Nintendo lifted the US price of the Switch 2 by $50 (effective September); and Valve boosted Steam Deck prices by up to $300 for the 1TB OLED model in May.
