Moldovan President Maia Sandu used the National Forum of Ethnic Minorities to point to drones that have crashed in the country and to call for unity. Moldova borders Ukraine, and its airspace has repeatedly been violated by unmanned aerial vehicles flying in from the Ukrainian side. The remarks were reported by the Moldovan news outlet Newsmaker and relayed by European Pravda.

Sandu stated that only accession to the European Union can secure Moldova's safety and allow each community to preserve and develop its culture. She said EU membership means security, more opportunities for development and a guarantee that every community can maintain and promote its culture.

The president recalled the case of a drone that fell in Etulia, a district populated mainly by Gagauz people. In her words, it did not ask what language people spoke. The same was true of drones that exploded between Ceadîr-Lunga and Valea Perjei, or in Crocmaz. Sandu stressed that everyone shares the same concerns and the same wish: to know their children are safe and to live in peace.

Scale of the incidents

Moldova's Ministry of Defence has reported 63 cases of unauthorised drone flights in the country since the start of the year, 15 of them in October alone. On the night of 15–16 October, five drones from the direction of Ukraine entered Moldova for a few minutes. Closer to the evening, another drone violated the country's airspace and exploded in a field.

Moldova's Foreign Ministry has condemned the repeated violations of national airspace.
