Sanita Upleja-Jegermane keeps leading Latvia’s public electronic media council
Sanita Upleja-Jegermane will continue as head of Latvia’s public electronic media council, with Una Klapkalne chosen as her deputy. The chair has broad responsibilities under the law governing the council.
The Public Electronic Mass Media Council (SEPLP) is keeping its current leadership. Sanita Upleja-Jegermane has been re-elected from among the council's members as chair for a one-year term. Una Klapkalne has been selected as her deputy and will take over the chair's duties whenever Upleja-Jegermane is unavailable.
Under the Law on Public Electronic Mass Media and Their Management, the chair organises the council's day-to-day work. The chair represents the council before public institutions and private parties without needing a separate mandate, and may take part in Cabinet of Ministers meetings with advisory rights on public electronic media issues. The chair also manages the council's budget, employs or dismisses secretariat staff, and signs agreements needed for the council to function.
The council consists of three members. It is authorised to make decisions when at least two members are present. Each member has one vote, and decisions are adopted by a simple majority.
Upleja-Jegermane and Klapkalne began working in their current roles on 4 August last year. At that time, Upleja-Jegermane was reappointed for another four years, while Klapkalne was appointed for her first term. Andris Saulītis started as a council member on 2 February this year. The first SEPLP composition was elected by the Saeima on 4 August 2021.
