Russian Aerospace Forces officer killed by car bomb in St. Petersburg

An explosion destroyed a car and killed a Russian Aerospace Forces officer in St. Petersburg, in a district where the Defense Ministry had purchased housing for military personnel.

An explosion in St. Petersburg has killed an officer of Russia's Aerospace Forces (VKS). The bomb had been placed inside his own car, a Chinese-made Geely, which was completely destroyed by the blast.

Where it happened

The explosion occurred outside an apartment block located in a district where Russia's Defense Ministry had previously purchased housing for servicemen. This indicates that the neighborhood is home to a number of people connected to the armed forces, including officers and other military personnel whose apartments were bought directly by the ministry.

What remains unknown

No further details have so far been made public about the exact circumstances of the explosion, who may have been behind it, or a possible motive. It is also not known whether anyone besides the car's owner, who died in the blast, was harmed.

The incident draws attention to the security situation in districts where people linked to Russia's defense sector reside, including senior military officers whose housing was arranged directly through the Defense Ministry. Car bombings of this kind have recently been reported in several Russian cities, though no official statement has yet been issued regarding this particular case in St. Petersburg.
