The building stands in the city centre, in the Admiralteysky District at 3 St. Isaac's Square, directly opposite St. Isaac's Cathedral. International media and eyewitnesses have reported the incident.
How the fire developed
The blaze was initially assigned complexity level 2, but this was later raised to level 3. Firefighters are battling the flames. Smoke has also been reported rising from the roof of a neighbouring building.
Eyewitness accounts posted on social media say the entire building was engulfed in flames and that a column of smoke was visible from several districts of the city.
Cause not yet established
The cause of the fire has not been determined. The responsible authorities say it will be established by a technical fire examination. One eyewitness said that shortly before the fire started, he heard a sound resembling an explosion. This has not been officially confirmed.
No reports of casualties have been made so far.
