Rusty barrier in Riga's Sarkandaugava left unrepaired for months, endangering pedestrians
In Riga's Sarkandaugava district, a rusty metal barrier that is the only thing separating pedestrians from busy traffic on Tvaika Street has recently been broken and remains unrepaired, a television investigation found.
A Latvian television programme, "Bez tabu", investigated a road safety issue in the Sarkandaugava district of Riga, where an apartment building with more than 100 units stands close to Tvaika Street.
Tvaika Street is one of the busier roads in the area, with substantial daily traffic. The only barrier protecting pedestrians from passing vehicles is a metal guardrail, which has become heavily rusted over time and was recently damaged, or broken, entirely.
Damage still not fixed
Despite the broken state of the barrier, the programme found that the responsible authorities or service providers have not yet carried out repairs or restoration work. As a result, residents of the building and other pedestrians who regularly move along or cross Tvaika Street currently face an elevated risk, since the protective barrier is no longer functioning as intended.
The question of why the damaged site has not been cleaned up or the barrier restored remained unanswered in the programme, pointing to a possible gap in accountability among the institutions responsible for maintaining the area.
The case highlights a broader concern about infrastructure upkeep in densely populated Riga neighbourhoods, where large numbers of residents rely daily on urban safety features that can deteriorate or be damaged, yet repairs may be delayed for an extended, unspecified period.
