Skeptics Doubt Funding for Narva Old Town Rebuild
Narva's mayor and property experts question the viability of a plan to rebuild the pre-war Old Town quarter, citing lack of investors and unclear economic returns.
Supporters of the plan to rebuild part of Narva's historic Old Town, specifically the Rüütli tänav quarter with replica pre-war buildings, argue it would boost tourism and attract investment. However, Mayor Katri Raik and property experts have expressed doubts, particularly over funding. The mayor stated that while a "slightly crazy" investor might exist somewhere, none has come forward. Property experts note that construction in peripheral areas is expensive, and there would not be enough customers initially to break even, let alone turn a profit. The example of the Town Hall renovation, costing over €6 million, was cited: despite space for a restaurant, no operator has been found in three years. Many commercial properties in Narva have been vacant for years. The plan, backed by around 1,000 signatures, includes 16 replica buildings covering 10% of the Old Town, which was largely destroyed in World War II. No builder has yet stepped forward.
