The Saudi-led military coalition said on Sunday, 8 November 2026, that its air defences intercepted several missiles fired by Yemen's Houthi militant group at Saudi Arabia. The Houthis are allies of Iran, and the coalition has been fighting them in Yemen for more than a decade. The latest attack points to continuing military escalation between the two sides.

What was intercepted

The coalition said ballistic and cruise missiles were launched toward the Saudi capital Riyadh, the oil-rich Eastern Province and the country's southern region. Air defences intercepted them.

Damage in Riyadh

Saudi Arabia's Energy Ministry said a building in Riyadh owned by the oil company Aramco was slightly damaged when debris from the air defence action fell on it. The ministry added that no one was hurt in the attempted attack.

Rising tensions

The Houthis have recently stepped up attacks on neighbouring Saudi Arabia, with airports and oil production facilities as the main targets. Saudi Arabia backs Yemen's internationally recognised government and leads the military coalition fighting the Houthi rebels.

On Saturday, the Houthis claimed responsibility for a series of missile and drone attacks deep inside Saudi territory. The long-running conflict in Yemen has recently flared up again in connection with the war between the United States and Iran.
