Latvian race walker Raivo Saulgriezis covered the half-marathon distance in 1:28 at a competition in Germany, setting a new national record. He placed third behind Sweden's Perseus Karlström and Germany's Leo Kops.

Latvian race walker Raivo Saulgriezis set a new Latvian record in the half-marathon race walk on Saturday at the "Lusatian Race Walking" competition in Germany, the Latvian Athletics Union (LVS) reported. Race walking is an athletics discipline in which the athlete must keep contact with the ground at all times, and the half-marathon distance is roughly 21 kilometres.
Result and placing
Saulgriezis crossed the finish line after one hour and 28 minutes, which is the new national record. He now holds the Latvian records in race walking at both the half-marathon and the marathon distances.
On the scoring table of World Athletics, the global governing body for athletics, his performance is worth 1,135 points.
How the race ended
The win went to Sweden's Perseus Karlström, who finished in one hour, 23 minutes and 24 seconds. Germany's Leo Kops took second place in one hour, 27 minutes and 45 seconds. Saulgriezis completed the top three by finishing third.
The source does not state the result of the previous record, so it is not known by how much Saulgriezis improved the earlier Latvian best.
