The result marks a notable moment for the Gelsenkirchen club, which dropped out of Germany's top division in 2021 after 33 consecutive years there, briefly returned for one season, then fell back down again. This season Schalke are back in the Bundesliga.
The goals
Robin Gosens opened the scoring midway through the first half after Union Berlin failed to properly clear a cross, allowing him to strike the ball into the net first time. The goal carried extra significance for Gosens, who was facing his former club, and he chose not to celebrate. It was Schalke's first Bundesliga goal in more than 1,200 days.
Early in the second half, Adil Aouchiche doubled the lead, placing the ball under the goalkeeper. After a VAR check for a possible offside, the referee allowed the goal to stand. Union Berlin pulled one back through Tim Skarke in stoppage time at the end of regulation, but Maximilian Weber restored Schalke's two-goal cushion soon after, sealing their third goal of the match.

Following the result, Schalke sit seventh in the table with three points from three matches. Augsburg and Freiburg lead the standings with maximum points from two games each, while Union Berlin remain on one point after three matches.
