World number one Scottie Scheffler took command of the Travelers Championship with a stunning 10-under-par 60 in Friday's second round. The American made 11 birdies against a single bogey to reach 16 under par at TPC River Highlands.

Scheffler had a chance to shoot 59 for the second time in his career, but his birdie putt from just over 26 feet on the 18th hole missed. "It was a little tricky," Scheffler said. "It went right to start, and there was a tonne of break right to left at the end. It was a tough read, but overall it was a really solid day. I was pretty happy with my execution."

Norway's Viktor Hovland also impressed with a bogey-free 61 that included seven birdies and an eagle, moving him to 14 under and two shots off the lead. Jim Furyk holds the PGA Tour record for the lowest round (58), while Scheffler is one of 14 players to have shot a 59, achieved at the 2020 Northern Trust.

Akshay Bhatia matched his career low with a bogey-free 62 to tie for third at 12 under with Eric Cole, who shot 65. England's Matt Fitzpatrick is five strokes back at 10 under after a 66 with two bogeys on his last three holes. Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood are at 9 under, and Scotland's Robert MacIntyre is at 8 under.
