Scheffler seals second Fedex Cup title and tops PGA Tour earnings list

Scottie Scheffler lived up to his billing as world number one on Sunday, winning the PGA Tour's season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta to secure his second Fedex Cup title. It was the 22nd victory of his career and came with a $10m prize.

Scheffler began the final round three shots behind overnight leader Viktor Hovland but produced a composed four-under 66, the only sub-par round among the last three groups on the course. That was enough to overtake his rivals as several faltered down the stretch.

Hovland's challenge unravelled as his driving grew erratic and his putter cooled at the wrong moment, leaving him to sign for a two-over 72 and finish three shots back in second. American debutant Ryan Gerard also carded 72 to finish third.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy could not replicate Saturday's momentum, posting an up-and-down 69 with four birdies and an eagle offset by five bogeys, leaving him tied for fourth alongside six other players.

One highlight of the day came from England's Justin Rose, who made a hole-in-one on the par-three ninth, though it did not translate into a serious title challenge. Fellow Englishman Alex Fitzpatrick matched Scheffler's 66, the lowest score of the day, to climb into a share of fourth on his tournament debut, capping a strong season that included his first DP World Tour win and a pairs victory with his brother Matt.

The win lifted Scheffler to the top of the PGA Tour's career money list with $130.4m, overtaking Tiger Woods' $120.9m, a mark Woods had held for 25 years. Scheffler now joins Woods and McIlroy as the only players to have won the Tour Championship more than once.
