NATO anti-drone systems tested at Sēlija range; some not yet in Latvian arsenal
International exercises at the Sēlija military range have concluded, with NATO member and partner nation representatives testing drone and counter-drone systems. The Defence Ministry says developing such capabilities remains a top defence priority for Latvia.
The "Baltic Trust" exercise, jointly organized by Latvia's National Armed Forces and the NATO Communications and Information Agency, has concluded at the Sēlija military training range. Around 650 participants from various NATO member states and partner nations took part.
What was tested
Participants tested a range of drone and counter-drone technologies, including both kinetic and electronic anti-drone systems. Kinetic systems are designed to physically destroy or intercept drones, while electronic systems disrupt or take control of unmanned aerial vehicles through signal interference.
Not all systems yet in Latvia's arsenal
The Defence Ministry noted that some of the counter-drone systems tested during the exercise are not currently part of the Latvian Armed Forces' equipment. At the same time, the ministry stressed that developing and acquiring such capabilities remains one of the country's top defence priorities, given the growing significance of drone threats in the current security environment.
The exercise took place amid continued regional attention to the risks posed by unmanned aerial vehicles, including possible incidents near NATO's eastern border.
