Céline Dion returns to the stage in Paris after six-year hiatus
Canadian singer Céline Dion performed a sold-out comeback concert near Paris on Saturday, her first full show in six years following a battle with the rare neurological disorder Stiff Person Syndrome.
Céline Dion, 58, fulfilled a long-held dream on Saturday by returning to the stage with a sold-out concert at the Plenitude Arena on the western edge of Paris, performing before roughly 30,000 fans. Visibly emotional, she opened the show with her 1990s French ballad "On ne change pas," pausing briefly as she was overcome, while the crowd chanted her name.
The concert marks a striking comeback after Stiff Person Syndrome — a rare, incurable autoimmune disorder causing severe muscle stiffness and painful spasms — forced her to cancel previous shows and left years of uncertainty over whether she would perform again. She revealed her diagnosis in December 2022, describing the condition as feeling like being strangled, with cramps severe enough to have broken her ribs.
Speaking in both English and French, Dion told the crowd it was "amazing" to finally be together, noting the path back had been "rockier than expected" but that she had held on to hope.
The largely female audience arrived in sequined outfits and shirts bearing her image, with fans travelling from as far as Tahiti and Sao Paulo. In the days before the show, Paris hosted costume contests, mass karaoke events and tribute boat cruises on the Seine, and the local train station serving the arena was temporarily renamed "Céline."
Dion's residency comprises 26 shows in total — 16 sold-out dates this September and October, followed by 10 more next May — and is projected to generate hundreds of millions of euros in economic impact. Over a four-decade career, she has sold around 260 million albums, including hits such as "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" and "Because You Loved Me."
