Shelton defeats Fonseca to reach Montreal Masters quarterfinal

American Ben Shelton, ranked 10th in the world, secured a win overnight against 19-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca, who is regarded as his country's top tennis player. The match finished 6:3, 7:6 in Shelton's favor.

Notably, the 23-year-old American entered the match as a slight favorite among bookmakers, with odds of 1.72 offered on his victory.

Second-set turnaround

In the second set, Shelton had to fight back after falling behind 0:3. He managed to level the set and push it to a tiebreak, where he jumped ahead 3:0 before closing it out 7:3.

Statistics showed Shelton's edge across several categories: he won more points on his first serve (78% versus 58%) and second serve (67% versus 53%), and claimed more total points overall (83 to 63). On break points, the American converted 3 of 6 chances compared to Fonseca's 2 of 5. Shelton also posted a far better ace-to-double-fault ratio (5-1 versus 0-3) and more clean winners, though he also committed more unforced errors (26-26 versus 15-32).

The win extended Shelton's head-to-head record against Fonseca to 2-0. This marks Shelton's second appearance in Montreal, having exited in the second round back in 2024.
