Semeņistaja Loses in First Round of WTA 125 Hamburg, Zeltiņa Wins in Italy

Latvian tennis player Darja Semeņistaja suffered a defeat in the first round of the WTA 125 tournament in Hamburg on Tuesday. The second-ranked Latvian, who holds the 109th position in the WTA rankings, lost 6–3, 3–6, 2–6 to eighth-seeded Austrian Sinja Kraus (WTA 80.). The two players met for the third time, with Kraus winning all encounters.

Semeņistaja made her debut at this Hamburg tournament, while Kraus has played here three times, reaching the round of 16 last year. In the second round, Kraus will face either Spain's Sara Sorribes Tormo (WTA 212.) or Armenia's Alina Charaeva (WTA 117.).

Semeņistaja will also compete in the doubles tournament in Germany, partnering with Kazakhstan's Zhibek Kulambayeva. In the first round, they will face German pair Noma Akugue and Tamara Korpatsch. The tournament in Hamburg is held on clay courts.

Meanwhile, another Latvian tennis player, Beatrise Zeltiņa, advanced to the second round of the ITF W-75 tournament in Cordenons, Italy, on Tuesday. Zeltiņa, ranked 447th in the WTA rankings, defeated qualifier Camilla Gennaro (WTA 676.) 6–3, 6–2.

For reaching the next round, Zeltiņa earned nine WTA singles ranking points. Her second-round opponent will be second-seeded Swede Kajsa Rinaldo Persson (WTA 217.) or Italy's Marta Lombardini (WTA 690.). Zeltiņa will also play doubles with Finland's Laura Hietaranta; the pair is seeded third and received a bye in the first round, facing Italians Gennaro and Lombardini in the second. The tournament in Cordenons is also played on clay.
