Senegal sack manager Pape Thiaw after World Cup exit
The Senegal Football Federation has dismissed head coach Pape Thiaw following the team's elimination in the last 32 of the 2026 World Cup. The decision came after an evaluation of sporting results and future prospects.

The Senegal Football Federation (FSF) has sacked head coach Pape Thiaw in the wake of the national team's exit at the last-32 stage of the 2026 World Cup.
Thiaw, who had been in charge since December 2024, led the Teranga Lions through a turbulent tournament. Senegal lost their first two group matches against France and Norway but bounced back with a 5-0 thrashing of Iraq, securing a spot in the knockout phase as one of the best third-placed teams.
In the last-32 round, Senegal faced Belgium. They took a 2-0 lead, but Belgium scored two late goals to force extra time, where a penalty sealed a dramatic 3-2 defeat for Senegal.
Following the elimination, Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye announced he would take a break from international duty while the current management remained in place. Gueye's statement hinted at discontent with the coaching staff.
The FSF said in a statement that Thiaw was dismissed "after a thorough evaluation of the sporting results and prospects of the national team" and that the decision was made "in the best interests of Senegalese football."
Thiaw's successor has not yet been named. The former international is one of the few local coaches to have led the national team.
