A major upset has occurred at the FIFA World Cup, which is being held for the first time with 48 teams. Paraguay, making only its fourth appearance in the knockout stage, eliminated Germany, a four-time World Cup winner.
Paraguay's best previous result was 8th place in 2010, when they lost to eventual champions Spain in the quarterfinals. Now, Paraguay will meet the winner of the France vs. Sweden match in the round of 16.
The tournament is co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four. The top two from each group advanced to the knockout stage, along with the eight best third-placed teams.
Semi-finals are scheduled for July 14 and 15, the bronze medal match on July 18, and the final on July 19. In 2022, Argentina became world champions by defeating France on penalties in Qatar.
