The Public Electronic Media Council (SEPLP), the body overseeing Latvia's public media, has called on the Saeima, the Latvian parliament, to cancel the urgent procedure for amendments to the Law on Public Electronic Media and Their Management. The matter concerns decisions on the historical brands of Latvian Radio and Latvian Television (LTV).
The council's reasoning
SEPLP considers that handling the amendments as urgent is not proportionate to the significance of the proposed rules. In the council's assessment, there are no circumstances that would justify adopting the amendments under an urgent procedure.
Urgency means faster consideration of a bill in parliament. If it were withdrawn, the amendments would be reviewed in the usual way.
The appeal is addressed to the Saeima, which decides on amendments to the law. The source does not say when the Saeima might take up the matter or whether lawmakers will agree with the council.
