Early September in Latvia brought unusually heavy rain and above-average warmth
Data from Latvia's Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre show the first ten days of September brought nearly two and a half times the normal rainfall, while temperatures ran about 1.5 degrees above average.
According to figures compiled by Latvia's Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, the first ten days of September were unusually wet and slightly warmer than typical for this time of year.
Rainfall far above normal
Across the country, average precipitation during this period reached 55.8 millimeters, equal to 247% of the norm. The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Priekuļi, where 135 millimeters fell — 658% of the average for this period based on 1991-2020 data. Zosēni also saw over 100 millimeters of rain. The driest location was Staļģene, where only 17.5 millimeters were measured.
Temperatures above average
The average air temperature in early September across Latvia was +15.5 degrees Celsius, roughly 1.5 degrees above the usual figure for this period. The lowest temperature, +8 degrees, was recorded on September 7 in Rūjiena, while the highest, +27.4 degrees, was measured on September 9 in Bauska.
Humidity and wind
Average relative humidity during the month's first ten days stood at 85% nationwide, ranging from 82% in Riga and Zvejniekciems to 90% in Kolka. The strongest wind gusts, reaching 20 meters per second, were observed on September 10 in Liepāja.
