Seven signs that may indicate a child has vision problems

Children often don't realize or can't express that they see poorly, so parents need to watch for indirect signs in everyday behavior. Experts point to several signals that, when repeated or occurring together, warrant a vision check.

Young children often lack the experience to compare their own eyesight with normal vision, so they may not realize they see worse than they should. Gradual changes in vision can be unconsciously compensated for by changing daily habits, making the problem harder to spot.

According to a 2025 systematic review combining data from 26 studies covering more than 37,000 children across 14 European countries, a clinically significant refractive error may affect roughly 18% of children.

What to watch for

Experts list several indirect signs. A child may squint frequently, close one eye, or tilt their head at an unusual angle to try to sharpen the image. Another sign is sitting unusually close to screens or holding text very close to the face, which is typical of nearsightedness.

Avoiding reading, reading slowly, skipping lines, or following words with a finger may point to difficulty coordinating both eyes to focus on a nearby object, though other causes are also possible. Similarly, quickly losing focus and struggling to concentrate on close-up tasks — but not on other activities — may signal visual discomfort rather than an attention problem.

Frequent eye rubbing after reading or screen use, as well as headaches around the forehead or eyes after close-up work, may point to visual strain. At school, a child may try to sit closer to the board or look at a classmate's notes instead of admitting they can't see what's written.

Declining academic results can also be linked to vision — a 2021 study published in JAMA Ophthalmology involving 2,304 schoolchildren found that those who received needed glasses through a vision care program showed improved reading results. Vision problems can also show up as reduced confidence in coordination, such as avoiding ball games.

When to see a doctor

Experts stress that regular checks matter even if a child doesn't complain, since a child can compensate for a weaker eye by relying on the stronger one. Sudden vision changes, severe eye pain, injury, crossed eyes, prolonged redness, double vision, or a white pupil appearing in photographs are reasons to seek medical help immediately.
