Serbian President Vučić Announces Resignation
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced he will resign from the presidency on Sunday evening. He said he would explain his reasons later.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić told reporters in New York that he plans to submit his resignation as president on Sunday at around 8:00 p.m. local time (9:00 p.m. Estonian time). He said he would explain the reasons behind his decision at a later point. The news was reported by the outlet "European Pravda," citing the PTC news agency.
The evening before, Vučić wrote on Instagram that serving as Serbia's president had been a great honor for him. He said he had tried every day to do his best, to justify the trust placed in him, and to serve his country faithfully, wishing Serbia well.
Political Context
On September 9, Vučić dissolved parliament at the proposal of Serbia's government and set October 25 as the date for parliamentary elections. The main council of the Serbian Progressive Party has already put Vučić forward as the leader of the "United Serbia" electoral list and as its candidate for prime minister.
So while Vučić is stepping down as president, he appears set to remain politically active, potentially moving toward the post of prime minister after the October vote.
