Euphoria gave me the courage to come out to my friend – now we’re together six years later

Confusing feelings
In the summer of 2019, a 17-year-old girl from Stockholm realized she was falling in love with her best friend, Ellen. They had been close since their first year of high school, part of a tight group of girls. Despite growing up in an accepting, liberal household, she always assumed she was straight and tried to ignore the flutter in her chest whenever Ellen smiled. She feared acting on those feelings might ruin their friendship.
A show that changed everything
Watching the first season of Sam Levinson's 'Euphoria' – set in suburban California, following reckless teenagers – the author was captivated by the storyline between Rue (Zendaya) and Jules (Hunter Schafer), a transgender girl. The tender, complex relationship, where sexual orientation wasn't explained or dramatized, felt liberating. It reflected her own insecurities and hopes, blurring the line between platonic and romantic love.
The first kiss
Inspired by Rue and Jules, the author finally kissed Ellen, who kissed her back. Morning light through the blinds confirmed it was the right decision. They have now been together for six years, slowly building a shared life of books, movie nights, and laughter. Though the author couldn't finish later seasons of 'Euphoria', she remains grateful for the first season: it gave her the courage to make the first move – the best decision she ever made.
