6 ways to get more out of your Apple Wallet

Apple Wallet, which evolved from the Passbook app rebranded in 2015, has grown into a multifunctional tool that goes well beyond storing boarding passes or movie tickets. The latest iOS 27 update brings several useful features that users may have overlooked.

Custom passes and bill splitting

With iOS 27, users can create custom passes for places not yet integrated with Apple Wallet, such as a gym scan tag or a Costco membership card. This can be done by photographing the physical card and letting Apple Intelligence process the details, or by starting from a ready-made template. Wallet can now also split a bill just by photographing a receipt — the system accounts for item quantities, tax and tip, though this feature only works with Apple Cash.

Digital IDs and travel

Wallet can store a digital driver's license or US passport where available — currently supported in 15 US states and Puerto Rico. A Digital ID can be used to verify age or identity, as well as for security checks on domestic flights, though a physical passport is still required for international travel.

Public transit and keys

The app lets users pay for public transit using contactless payment, and Express Mode makes this even more convenient since it doesn't require unlocking the phone and can even work after the battery has died. Wallet can also store digital keys for smart home locks and cars, as well as hotel, workplace or student IDs.

Order tracking

Another feature allows Wallet to automatically pull order tracking information from a user's email inbox, making it easier to follow deliveries without manually searching through messages.
