The Latvian Forest Certification Council and the Latvian Forest Owners Association have launched the “European Tree of the Year in Latvia 2026” competition for the sixth time. The initiative calls on everyone to share stories about trees that hold a special place in Latvia's cultural and historical heritage and natural values.
What can become the “Tree of the Year”?
The search is for trees connected to historical events, notable personalities, local traditions, legends, or special memories of residents. This competition is a way to preserve such stories and make them known not only in Latvia but also beyond its borders.
Purpose and participation
The organizers aim to encourage people to explore and preserve the local environment and cultural heritage by sharing stories about trees that are an integral part of Latvian life, nature, landscape, and history. Latvia officially counts 6,675,600,290 trees, highlighting the wealth of potential stories.

The “European Tree of the Year” competition has been running in Europe since 2002, organized by entities related to forests, land, environment, and history. Submissions about a tree and its story can be sent until September 15.
