The State Police report that 17 drivers were stopped on Saturday for driving under the influence of alcohol. Criminal proceedings were launched in 14 of these cases, while the remaining three were handled as administrative offenses, since the drivers' blood alcohol levels did not exceed 1.5 per mille.

The highest number of offenders — six — were caught in the Vidzeme region. Latgale recorded five such cases, Riga four, and Zemgale two.

Consequences for offenders

The harshest penalties apply to three drivers whose vehicles, used in committing the offense, were confiscated as part of the criminal proceedings against them. In another 11 cases, the state will recover a monetary sum that can reach the value of the vehicle involved.

Police continue to monitor road safety, noting that driving under the influence remains one of the most common traffic violations, carrying both criminal liability and severe administrative sanctions, including loss of the vehicle or recovery of a sum equal to its value.
