Five severely intoxicated drivers caught in Latvia on Saturday
On Saturday, Latvian State Police caught five drivers with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 1.5 per mille, launching criminal proceedings against them.

Last Saturday, July 12, 2026, several cases of drunk driving were recorded in Latvia. According to the State Police, five drivers were found with a very high blood alcohol concentration – more than 1.5 per mille. Criminal proceedings have been initiated in these cases.
Among these five cases, three occurred in the Riga region, one in Vidzeme, and one in Latgale. Two drivers will have their vehicles confiscated, while the value of vehicles from three others will be recovered.
Additionally, six administrative proceedings were started for driving under the influence where the alcohol level did not reach the criminal threshold. Of these six, three were recorded in Zemgale, two in the Riga region, and one in Vidzeme.
The State Police reminds of strict penalties for drunk driving, which can include criminal liability, fines, and vehicle confiscation.
