Six volunteers complete 100-day isolation study simulating future space missions

A 100-day scientific study concluded on Friday, during which six volunteers — men and women from six different countries — lived in an isolated facility without any natural sunlight for the entire duration. The participants spent the whole period under artificial lighting, in conditions designed to mimic the challenges of long-duration space missions.

The purpose of the experiment was to examine how the human body and mind respond to prolonged isolation and the absence of natural light — conditions astronauts could face on journeys to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Simulations of this kind help scientists and space agencies prepare future crews both physically and psychologically for demanding missions ahead.

With the study now complete, the participants have returned to their normal environment after 100 days, regaining access to natural daylight and everyday routines. The research adds to a series of similar initiatives being carried out as humanity prepares for increasingly ambitious space exploration plans.
