Sevilla host struggling Valencia as under-pressure Corberán seeks first win
On Friday, Sevilla welcomed bottom-placed Valencia to the Sánchez-Pizjuán for La Liga's fifth matchday, with Valencia coach Carlos Corberán reportedly facing the sack should his side lose.
Contrasting form heading into the match
Sevilla hosted Valencia at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán on Friday, September 11, in a fixture opening La Liga's fifth round between two clubs in very different positions. Luis García Plaza's Sevilla sat seventh with seven points before kickoff, having beaten Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Club, but arrived off the back of a 3-1 home defeat to Atlético Madrid and a 1-1 draw at Espanyol.
Valencia, meanwhile, began the round bottom of the table alongside Elche with just one point and a goal difference of minus eight. Carlos Corberán's side had lost three straight matches, most recently a 0-5 home defeat to Barcelona. According to USA Today, Valencia had scored only one goal all season — fewer than the two own goals they had conceded against themselves.
Corberán's job on the line
OneFootball, citing Spanish outlet AS, reported that a defeat in Seville could cost Corberán his position. Notably, the Sánchez-Pizjuán is also where Corberán earned his first point as Valencia coach, a 1-1 draw in January 2025. Historically, however, Valencia had not lost to Sevilla in six meetings, including a 2-0 win at this same ground back in March, as both USA Today and OneFootball note.
OneFootball also highlights a significant squad-building gap between the two clubs: Sevilla completed 21 transfer deals over the summer (11 arrivals, 10 departures), while Valencia's overhaul was considerably smaller. Spanish outlet Superdeporte adds that Valencia's squad has been further weakened by a growing list of injuries, complicating matters for a coach already working with what club CEO Ron Gourlay left as, in the outlet's words, a deficient squad.
Lineups and buildup
According to Superdeporte, Sevilla lined up with Odysseas in goal, a back line of Iglesias, Castrín, Kike Salas and Suazo, a midfield of Agoumé, Fofana, M. Sierra and Félix, and Isaac and Stassin leading the attack. Valencia fielded Dimitrievski in goal behind Gayà, Tárrega, Pepelu and Arnau, with Dieng, Ugrinic and Guerra in midfield, and Otorbi, Sato and Danjuma up front.
According to MARCA's live matchday coverage, the game kicked off Friday evening with both sides looking to reverse poor recent form — Sevilla without a win in two matches, Valencia on a three-game losing streak. USA Today had predicted a 2-0 Sevilla win ahead of the match.
