Shelly launches $50 security camera that works without a subscription
Shelly has unveiled a new $49.99 home security camera that can operate without any additional subscription fees. The device will soon be available through the company's online store and other retailers.
Shelly, which last month released a budget-friendly flood sensor known for its impressive battery life, has now announced a new home security camera. The Shelly Camera will cost $49.99 and will be sold in black or white, becoming available soon through the company's own online store as well as other resellers.
Unlike some competitors such as Wyze, which offers 2K resolution cameras for around $40, Shelly's first camera is limited to 1080P resolution. It features a wide field of view — 110 degrees horizontally and 70 degrees vertically — along with night vision capability. The camera has no built-in battery, so installation requires running a USB-C cable to provide power.
Features without a subscription
Without a paid subscription, the camera can still live-stream video over Wi-Fi to various devices, save recorded events locally to a microSD card, and trigger smart home automations through other Shelly devices, such as switching on a floodlight when motion is detected.
For those who choose to pay for a subscription, additional benefits include cloud storage for recordings and smart object detection capable of distinguishing between people, pets, and vehicles. This allows users to tailor alerts and automations to specific situations.
