Chinese President Xi Jinping, arriving in the United States for a visit running from September 23 to 25, issued a statement stressing that the two powers should pursue partnership rather than rivalry. He said China's pursuit of national rejuvenation and America's push to reclaim its greatness could proceed side by side, with each country's success benefiting the other and ultimately the wider world.
In his remarks, Xi called on both sides to meet each other halfway and work toward stable relations built on cooperation as the foundation, with competition kept within reasonable limits, disagreements managed, and peace treated as genuinely achievable rather than merely declared.
Trump's response
Speaking briefly to reporters after returning to the White House, US President Donald Trump said he personally went out to greet Xi's plane, adding that he believed the Chinese side appreciated the gesture and describing the Chinese delegation as "extraordinary people."
Background
The visit follows an invitation from Trump. Shortly before it, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that during a meeting with Trump he had raised the idea of involving Xi Jinping in talks aimed at ending Russia's war against Ukraine.
