Xi: success of both nations can go hand in hand
In a statement issued upon his arrival in the US, the Chinese leader said his country's pursuit of "great national rejuvenation" and America's effort to restore its greatness can proceed side by side rather than at each other's expense. According to Xi, the two powers can help each other succeed, which would ultimately benefit the entire world.
The Chinese leader also called on both sides to move toward one another and work together to build a stable relationship — one where cooperation forms the foundation, competition is kept within proper bounds, disagreements are resolved, and peace is genuinely real rather than merely declared.
Trump's response
Speaking briefly to reporters after returning to the White House, where he had gone to greet Xi's plane, Trump said he believed the Chinese side appreciated the gesture, describing the Chinese delegation as "extraordinary people."
Background
It had previously been reported that Xi Jinping would visit the US from September 23 to 25 at the invitation of President Trump. The day before, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that during talks with Trump he had raised the idea of involving Xi Jinping in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
