Teen charged after Sydney knife attack nearly severs boy's hand
A 15-year-old boy has been charged after an alleged knife attack in Sydney left a 17-year-old with his hand nearly completely severed. The accused was refused bail ahead of a children's court appearance.
A violent incident in the Sydney suburb of Redfern on Wednesday evening has left a 17-year-old boy with a near-complete amputation of his hand, prompting a police investigation and the arrest of a teenage suspect.
New South Wales police were called to the area around 6pm and found the older teenager with his hand partially severed. Officers allege he had been attacked with a knife by another boy, aged 15, in a car park on Morehead Road.
Paramedics treated the injured teenager at the scene before he was taken to hospital with injuries to his right arm. As of the latest reports, it remained unclear whether surgeons had been able to reattach the hand.
Arrest and charges
Early on Thursday morning, following further inquiries, police stopped a car travelling along Redfern Street in Redfern. Shortly afterward, they arrested the 15-year-old suspect.
He has been charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, as well as with breaching existing bail conditions. A court refused him bail, and he was scheduled to appear before a children's court on Thursday.
