Two men seriously injured after building collapses in Sydney
A building under construction suddenly collapsed in Sydney's inner-city suburb of Ultimo on Monday, leaving two men in a serious condition. They were pulled from the debris and taken to hospital.
Two men were rescued from the rubble after a building suddenly collapsed in an inner-city suburb of Sydney on Monday. According to Ambulance NSW, the men, aged in their 30s and 60s, were in a serious condition and were transported to hospital.
The roof and wall of the building on Wattle Street in Ultimo caved in at around 11am, sending debris onto the street and a neighbouring Shell petrol station. Large piles of bricks were scattered on top of each other, and the destroyed roof damaged vehicles parked nearby.
Fire and Rescue NSW acting superintendent Peter Murray said a portion of the building had collapsed and some debris had fallen onto cars within the service station area. The building was still under construction.
Urban search and rescue firefighters attended the scene, while police cleared the area and evacuated workers from the construction site. Surrounding buildings were also evacuated, and police urged the public to stay away from the area.
Five other people were assessed at the scene by ambulance personnel and were released without further treatment.
