A 13-year-old boy has been charged with murder after a man was stabbed to death on Friday evening in Mt Druitt, a suburb in western Sydney, Australia. Police are investigating and have asked the public for information.
The incident
Emergency services were called to Mt Druitt on Friday evening after reports that a man had been assaulted. Police found the man, who was in his 30s, with stab wounds to his torso. Paramedics treated him, but he died at the scene.
Several items were seized at the scene, including a bladed instrument.
Arrests
The 13-year-old was arrested on Sunday at Mt Druitt police station. He was charged with murder, breach of bail and an unrelated robbery offence. Later that evening a 16-year-old boy was arrested at a home in Cabramatta. He faces charges of murder and accessory after the fact to an offence. Both were refused bail and are due to appear before a children's court on Monday.
Investigation
Supt Brendan Gorman told reporters over the weekend that detectives were examining the alleged murder and that about "a dozen people" were in the area when the stabbing happened. On Saturday he called it a "horrendous incident" that was "certainly concerning for police", adding that the investigation would determine whether it was random or targeted.
The victim has not been formally identified but is believed to have "some history" with police, Gorman said. Officials urged anyone with information, including CCTV or dashcam footage, to come forward.
